Plentiful Gifts

Is your congregation longing to thrive?

Nourishing Members for the Flourishing of Small Congregations

Plentiful Gifts is a new grant-funded program designed to nourish members for the flourishing of small member congregations. Shifting away from the pastor-centered model of ministry, the program aims to feed and sustain small-but-vital congregations by exploring new ministry models and nurturing the gifts and talents of lay people. Knowing that lay people are already burdened with doing the work of the church, this program is not about more homework to do or yet more assignments to complete. This is an opportunity for lay people to be fed in a targeted way that will strengthen God’s children where they may feel weak or where they are most committed.

Participating churches will work with the Plentiful Gifts team to explore their identity, community, challenges, and ministry gifts. A small group within each congregation (typically 3-4 people) will then receive training and support in one or more specific areas such as preaching, worship, and pastoral care. The program does require a two-year commitment, starting with a six-month study phase followed by 18 months of tailored learning. There is no cost for churches to participate. Our hope is for four to seven John Knox Presbytery churches to participate.
